Powder coating primers and multi-layer systems

A primer is one part of the coating system, not a stand-alone performance guarantee. The substrate, pretreatment, primer, topcoat and cure of each layer must work together.

Define the complete system

Multi-layer specifications are used when the project calls for a defined base coat and topcoat rather than a single powder layer. The correct route depends on the metal, its condition, the preparation process, the exposure and the selected topcoat.

  • Substrate type, fabrication and surface condition.
  • Pretreatment process and quality controls.
  • Primer and topcoat compatibility.
  • Application sequence, target film build and coverage.
  • Curing conditions for each layer and the complete system.
  • End use, exposure and the test or specification to be met.
